During an enforced two hours of staring at this Salford tower block in ‘Hanky Park’ I realised that quite a bit of thought had gone into the design and particularly the use of colour. While the block to the left of the one (out of shot) is entirely a single drab brown this one shifts through browns to oranges and yellows. The effect is to make the building seem lighter and less imposing. There is even a hint that the panels towards the side of the building are just slightly darker giving a type of double peak effect.
In the 1960s or so when this was first built the effect was probably a bit too harsh (although it would be interesting to find a colour photo from the period for reference). The purpose of the design is actually accentuated by the rather poor efforts to repair individual panels. The results is the darker panels appear too high up and lighter colours too low in the design. Curiously the colours of the curtains - which are obviously down to the individual choice of tenants - have an influence on the impact but there does appear to be a tendency for light/white curtains to the top of the building and darker/no curtains towards the base.
Never has this tower block suffered so much scrutiny.
Why on earth do I miss Salford so much? it seems to be the thing I look for most on Tumblr.
"It’s funny because Shirley Phelps got a boyfriend, had premaritial sex, got pregnant and had a son out of wedlock. Now she preaches that everyone who does the same is perverted and hell-bound for their conduct, yet she said in another documentery that SHE isn’t going to hell for it. My hypocrite senses are tingling…"
